Some of the images captured are nearly two decades old, where as some have been photographed for the first time more recently. The time slider function on Google Street View allows us to revisit some of Lancashire's streets from years gone by. This information helps create the bird's-eye views, looking down on the city that can also be viewed in Street View. The car also has lasers which reflect off buildings and other objects and help Google to create 3D models for their maps.

To create a digital 'Street View' of any location, Google's cameras have to snap a number of pictures before pairing every one with GPS data, match each photograph to the correct location. There are now over 220 billion Street View images taken in over 100 countries and territories across the world. At just a click of a button, we can see almost any street in any country around the world. Strangely, this means Google Map addicts can stalk Cypress subdivisions virtually street by street, but views of Southampton are limited to sideways glances from Shepherd and Bissonnet.Google Maps has truly changed the way we navigate. But most inside-the-loop neighborhoods are still left out. South Houston, plus areas west of 290 and 288 outside the Loop are now mapped street by street. Now, they are available on just about every street.
Previously, street views from Google Maps were available only from major thoroughfares in the Houston area.
The map above shows the extent of the Houston street-level photos now available through Google Maps. Last week Google rolled out a major update of its Street View feature, adding 13 new cities and a national park, and expanding its coverage in 6 cities.
